HEC Stock Market Competition

Students from the Upward Capital investment club had the opportunity to take part in the HEC Stock Market Competition, organized by HEConomie. Known as the largest university-level stock market simulation in Quebec, the event brings together over 100 students from more than five universities across Canada. This two-week competition provided participants with a valuable chance to put their theoretical knowledge of financial markets into practice.

Designed to simulate the fast-paced and dynamic nature of real-time trading, the competition put participants’ portfolio management skills to the test. Financial analysis, investment strategies, and risk management were key aspects of the challenge. The objective was straightforward: to achieve the highest portfolio value by the end of the competition, starting with a virtual portfolio of $100,000.

In terms of results, the Upward Capital club members performed exceptionally well. Filipe Duarte Ribeiro and Andrew Hounsell secured 6th and 5th place, while Ali Achour and Maximilien Schmitt-Laurin claimed 3rd and 1st place.

The competition wrapped up with an awards gala at HEC Montréal, where more than $3,000 in prizes were distributed to the top three winners. The event was sponsored by organizations such as Fidelity Investments, CFA Montréal, Fiera Capital, and HEC Montréal. Lastly, participants had the opportunity to attend a networking session with their peers and industry professionals.
